In early September 1807, a young Northumbrian, Robert Morrison (1782-1834), arrived in the trading port of Canton, commissioned by the London Missionary Society to first learn and then translate the Bible into Chinese, a language virtually unknown in the West at the time. Controversially employed from 1809 as official interpreter for the East India Company, in 1819 Morrison completed a translation of the Bible in Chinese. During a twenty-seven year residence in China Morrison laid the foundation for the Chinese Protestant Church and for the development of British sinology.

This study day explores Morrison’s legacy and the impact of his work on the history of Christianity in China and on Sino-British relations over the last two hundred years.

Key themes explored during the day:
- Morrison, missionaries and Sino-British relations -
- The history and impact of the Bible in China -
- Chinese Protestantism: a 200 year story -

In addition to key note speakers, there will be panel and plenary discussions.
